PARTICIPATE IN A SURVEY ABOUT TREATMENT NEEDS
Prevent It: Youth (PI:Y): Engagement Survey for Intervention Targeting Youth who have Sexual Urges Toward Children

Study Aim and Research Questions

The main aim of this study is to evaluate the treatment needs and determine appropriate treatment targets, as well as get a sense of the feasibility of an adapted intervention for youth and young adults who are struggling with their sexual urges or interests toward children. We will seek to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the most important treatment needs/targets of youth and young adults who are struggling with their sexual urges or interests toward children aged 12 or younger?
2. What are possible recruitment strategies for an online, anonymous intervention targeting youth and young adults who are struggling with their sexual urges or interests toward children aged 12 or younger?

Who Can Participate

To participate in this survey, you must be:
1. Between the ages of 16 and 25 years old
2. Experiencing/Experienced sexual urges toward children aged 12 or younger
3. Able to read and write in English

What you’ll be asked to do

You will be asked to complete an online, anonymous survey (meaning your identity will not be known or recorded) that will be used to determine effective treatment needs and targets for an online, anonymous intervention for youth and young adults who are struggling with their sexual urges or interests toward children aged 12 or younger.

This survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete. If you complete the entire survey, we will donate $20 to one of the World Childhood Foundation’s project partners to thank you for your time. Your identity will remain completely anonymous and you will not be involved with the exchange of funds in any way.

You will be asked to answer questions about your sexual urges or interests toward children and what an effective and engaging treatment would look like in your opinion. If you are between 18-25 years old you will be asked to recall your experiences with your sexual urges or interests toward children when you were 16-17 years old and what an effective and engaging treatment would have looked like to you at these ages.

The questions will be given in different formats. For example, you will be asked to review and select which option(s) best apply to you and rate how important things are to you (or would have been to you) in relation to treatment needs. You will also be asked open-ended questions (meaning you will need to type your own response) about your former treatment experiences.

INTRODUCTION

You are invited to participate in this research study because you are a young adult who is 18 to 25 years of age, and you may be experiencing sexual urges toward children aged 12 or younger. The survey will take about 15-20 minutes of your time to complete. Your participation is anonymous. Taking part in this study is voluntary. You can decide not to take part or leave the study later with no penalty to you. This consent form provides you with information to help you make an informed choice. Please read this document carefully and ask any questions you may have. All your questions should be answered to your satisfaction before you decide if you want to participate in this research study. Please take your time in making your decision. We thank you for taking the time to read this consent form and for considering taking part in this study.

IS THERE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST?
There are no conflicts of interest to declare for this study.

WHY IS THIS STUDY BEING DONE?
Very few interventions are available for youth who are struggling with their sexual urges toward children aged 12 or younger. To help with this, we are adapting an existing internet-based program called Prevent It 2 that is available to adults who are struggling with these same sexual urges. The adapted version will be called Prevent It: Youth (PI:Y) and targeted instead towards youth (those under 18 years old).

We are hosting this survey to determine treatment needs and goals for the PI:Y program, to find out if the program is wanted, suitable, and sustainable for youth who are having sexual urges toward children aged 12 or younger.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THIS STUDY?
You will be asked to complete a survey online (through SoSci). This questionnaire will take about 15-20 minutes to complete. You may choose not to answer any question you wish. Your participation is anonymous. The information you provide is for research purposes only.

WHAT WILL THE SURVEY ASK?
In this survey, we will ask some general personal details (age, sex, gender, ethnicity, level of education, etc.) and where you found the survey link (Clearnet, Darknet, clinician referral, etc.).
You will be asked to recall your experiences with your sexual urges toward children aged 12 or younger when you were 16-17 years old, such as:

 What are some things you frequently struggle with in relation to your sexual urges toward children aged 12 or younger?
 What do you think would be helpful to see in a treatment program / intervention focusing on managing these sexual urges?
 If you’ve completed a former treatment program / intervention related to these sexual urges, what did you find effective? What did you find ineffective?
 What would encourage you to seek intervention / treatment addressing these sexual urges?
 What age(s) and gender(s) are you most sexually attracted to?

We will NOT ask you about any past or current sexual and/or illegal behavior.

Additionally, you will be asked several open-ended questions about your experiences and perspectives. It is important that you do not include the following information: any information that may identify you, any information about illegal behaviors you have engaged in, and/or any information about children that may be at risk of sexual harm. We will remind you of this before each open-ended question. If you follow our instruction and do not include identifying information, we will not be able to identify you (in other words, you will remain anonymous) and we will not be obligated to follow mandatory reporting laws.

CAN YOU CHOOSE TO LEAVE THE STUDY?

You may choose to not participate, skip questions, or leave the study at any point. You do not have to provide a reason. If you wish to exit the survey once you have started the study, please select the “withdraw” button available on each page. Because all responses are anonymous, we will not be able to remove your responses if you do not click this button. Any answers recorded before you leave the survey will be used for research only, but no new information will be collected after you withdraw. It won’t be possible to remove your responses after this because the researchers will not know which responses are yours.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OR HARMS TO YOU FROM PARTICIPATING?
You may experience some emotional discomfort answering questions. You are not obligated to answer questions that make you feel uncomfortable or triggered. To help, mental health resources are provided here and in the debriefing form at the end of the survey:
Canada Specific: https://www.ccmhs-ccsms.ca/education/mh-resources-en
United States Specific: https://www.cdc.gov/mental-health/caring/index.html
International: https://findahelpline.com/

There are also some social and legal risks possible with your participation. Importantly, if you were to disclose identifying information (e.g., full-name, address, phone number) and information that suggests you are at risk of harming yourself, at risk of harming someone, or know of a child being harmed or at risk of harm, we are legally required to report this information to relevant authorities (e.g., law enforcement). However, this risk is minimized because your responses are anonymous. To reduce this risk further and safeguard your anonymity, we recommend that you also complete this survey in a private area and avoid any identifying information in the open-ended questions.
If you are concerned about your sexual thoughts or behaviors, or have questions about child sexual abuse, the link provided contains a list of low/no-cost resources available (also available at the end of the survey): https://www.jhsph.edu/research/centers-and-institutes/moore-center-for-the-prevention-of-child-sexual-abuse/resources/csa-prevention/

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO YOU FROM PARTICIPATING?
You may not receive direct benefits from participating in this study. However, we hope the information learned from this study will help other people who are struggling with their sexual urges toward children and will be used to develop the PI:Y program.

WHAT IS THE COST FOR YOU TO PARTICIPATE?
There are no extra costs to you.

HOW WILL YOUR INFORMATION BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?
If you decide to participate in this study, the research team will only collect the information they need for this study.
This study is confidential and anonymous. We will not ask you for information that discloses your identity. As stated above, you may choose to not participate, skip questions, or leave the study at any point.
Your privacy is protected by the server at www.soscisurvey.de (no storage of IP addresses; use of SSL encryption with a signed certificate; server is secured against unauthorized access according to common standards; access to the server is SSH-encrypted; the questionnaires do not use any cookies). The data you provide is securely held on a server in Germany. There is very little risk associated with storing data in an outside server in Germany and it is protected by the highest level of encryption available (TLS 1.2). In fact, “in an international comparison, Germany offers a very high level of data protection - both with regard to the obligations of companies as well as with regard to governmental/agency access and interference” (see https://www.soscisurvey.de/en/privacy). Further, the data are subject to legal regulations such as the Federal Data Protection Act, and the EU General Data Protection Regulation. After the data has been collected online, it will be downloaded and converted to a password protected dataset that will be stored on a password protected computer and secure server at the Royal Ottawa
Mental Health Centre. At this time, the data will be deleted from the SoSci server. The complete dataset will be kept for 10 years. This dataset can only be accessed by people who are involved in research. The dataset may also be accessed by Royal Ottawa Healthcare Group Research Ethics Board to ensure continuing ethics compliance. Combined survey responses may be presented at international conferences and in academic journals. These data will remain entirely anonymous; we may include relevant anonymous quotes as illustration, but no identifying information will be included.

WILL YOU BE PAID TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS STUDY?
If you complete the entire survey, we will donate $20 to one of the World Childhood Foundation’s project partners as a token of appreciation. Your identity will remain completely anonymous and you will not be involved with the exchange of funds in any way, nor will you receive any direct compensation for completing the survey. Donations will only be made on behalf of completed surveys, therefore, if you decide to leave the study early, a donation will not be made.
