On thursday there was a documentary in German TV (september 17th, 20:15 on 3sat) that contained summarized data from new studies that correct some of the data previously known and some comments by researchers. The title is "Unheilbar pädophil?" which translates to "Incurable pedophilic?" by Liz Wieskerstrauch.

Here are all the numbers summarized:
MiKADO-study (N=9000; men only (18+); "kids" is defined as male and/or female children aged 12 and younger)
22% of men find kids attractive
4.4% do report sexual fantasies about/including such kids (including fantasies about all kinds of sexual intimacy like stroking, petting to penetrative intercourse) [that does not necessarily qualify those 4.4% as pedophilic but is as close to it a diagnosis as one can get with a simple survey without professionals actually personally questioning the clients]
The interviewed scientist Jenina Neutze suggests (not part of the study!) that about half of the people with fantasies had already acted on them and that each offender produces several victims.
1.4% reported to have had at least one sexual contact to at least one child
2.2% willingly used child abuse "imagery" (not defined if real or virtual but likely meant: real images. Willingly describes that the question was if they actively searched for the images to use them for arousal)
EDIT: Link to the MiKADO study, description and results: http://www.mikado-studie.de/
They don't see clear differences between brains and sexual arousal between pedophiles and not-pedophiles. Only the fact that they react to different images.
There are 2 clear differences visible between offenders and non-offenders: one being in the Amygdala and one in a nervous system stretching from the frontal reagons to the back of the brain [the documentary did not define whether those "offenses" were only hands-on-offences or included mere CP consumption as well] [the film does not define if this was only among pedophilic offenders and pedophilic non-offenders or among all child-offenders and pedophilic non-offenders]
Their conclusion is that this difference may show if someone will be able to resist their impulses or not [The doc left out the possibility that the act of abuse causes the difference in the abuser's brains]
When sex is allowed or not in Germany:
adult 18+ and teens 16+ = always legal
adult 18+ and teen 14-16 = sometimes legal
adult 18+ and child under 14 = always illegal
teens 14-18 and younger children = illegal
teens 14-18 with peers = legal as long as consenting
children below 14 with peers = legal as long as consenting
no difference between girls and boys
"Should pedophiles who haven't offended better be dead?": 14% yes in Dresden (Germany), 27% yes in englich online survey.
"preventive incarceration for them": 40-50% said yes
Additional comments of Mrs. Janina Neutze (now at the PPD in Regensburg, previously part of the Berlin team): A finnish study with twins found that there was a small definitive part of what's causing pedophilia in the genes but still 85% of the reasons were clearly set somewhere in the development/environmental influence of a person.
When children met up with adults who groomed them in chats by sexualising the conversation, the meeting led sexual abuse in 100% of the cases (no study named, may be only experience).
Questioning of young adults and teens and kids about sexual abuse showed that one third of offenders were female. There clearly are offensive females but we don't know if they act motivated by sexual inclination or by other mechanisms like antisocial tendencies or inavalability of other sexual partners.
Additional comments of Till Amelung (therapist at the PPD in Berlin): The position of the institute is that imagery that were produced in ways that have hurt children are not acceptable. That includes documentations of child sexual abuse and erotic posing of children (as Prof. Beier has clarified, defining that what makes a child do something just for an adult's sexual pleasure, even if only erotic posing, harms the child)
New data of follow-up testing show that there has been a big number of clients who finished the therapy at the PPD who continued to view CP through/after therapy and also some people who have viewed CP for the first time after therapy (not giving a definition if virtual CP is included). The decrease in actual sexual offending is there but due to the low number of cases (about 100) not really significant. [That's bad news in my book since it sounds like some clients did offend again/for the first time after therapy ] Till Amelung's comment was: "In the end we can't stop a man, who wants to abuse from abusing a child. We can help men, who don't want to abuse, to succeed to not offend. Of that I am sure."
Many men who take medication that reduces sexual urges find it helpful to be rid of the hated sexual impulses/fantasies but often experience strong side-effects.
